Ah Tenwek at last

July 13, 2009

Tenwek aerialWell we’re here, and we’ve established the most important thing…the internet connection–just kidding.  We had a nice orientation of the hospital which seems more compact then the aerial shot would make you believe.

But in reality this hospital is quite amazing having started from two concrete sheds about 40 ft square with intermittent electricity (that is none at night).  Now there’s 24 hour electricity due to a hydroelectric dam, an ICU with vents, and most importantly an IT department that provides wireless internet (again joking on the last part).  In the few short hours we’ve been here we’ve learned about a baby who recently died with Tetralogy of Fallot, a right sided arch and esophageal atresia.  Later we learned about a new gastroschisis baby (for the lay people that means the baby’s belly wall hadn’t formed completely prior to delivery).

Interestingly, we were even given pagers here…how’d that happen!??  Well dinner’s in 10 minutes, so we have to jet.  I’ll try to post more later.  The kids are doing well per a nice update from Melissa.  Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.  If you know people who we forgot to send this blog too, please pass this along.
