Off to Africa

April 30, 2010

A short post because we’re about to board.

We’re off to Africa again rather unexpectedly. We thought our international traveling days were over for a little while after our trip last year to Kenya. But when the opportunity unexpectedly opened up for us to go to Togo, West Africa, we couldn’t say no. For me it was a return trip to a place where I had made some great friends in 2005 as a medical student. In fact several friends of mine from that previous trip (John and Peter) are joining us. For Ginnie it’s a chance to meet all the great people at the Hopital Baptiste Biblique for the first time

Togo is a slim piece of land east of Ghana. It reminds me in some ways of Rhode Island in terms of its geographic shape. Togo is a former French colony which is great for me since I spent so many years studying the language. Nonetheless, my command of the language is limited at times by a slow recall of vocabulary.

Yeah...it's on

We finished packing at about 2:30 this morning. Weighing the bags and making sure they were each just under 50 lbs in the early morning is always less than fun, but a good breakfast with our neighbors Yvonne & Cico hit the spot, and we were ready to go again. We couldn’t resist taking a picture in front the Southwest sign…indeed grab your bags the Africa adventure is one again.

It was hard to leave the kids again, especially since Noah loves watching the PAACS surgery video and keeps saying “Daddy, I wanna be a surgery and go to Africa.” And if you ask if Esther can be one too, he gives a big smile and says “Yeah!” So who knows if that will come to fruition or not, but it’s great to see children dream about the future.

Thanks Lisa and Tina! It certainly does help to know that people actually read the blog. We appreciate your prayers for us and our kids. Sorry I was so slow in responding…Aaron & Ginnie
