Off again to Africa

March 7, 2011

Well, Ginnie & I are off again to Kenya. Amazing…our third international trip to Africa in less than two years. This time we’re off to Eldoret to check out the IU-Moi Program (http://www.iukenya.org/). There is a neat consortium out there sponsored by the NHLBI (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/about/globalhealth/) run primarily by Duke. We are going out there with Dave Matthews (see the picture below), a general surgeon who has been instrumental in setting up the operative services at the Moi Teaching Referral Hospital (MTRH http://www.mtrh.or.ke/). The hope is that they will be ready for cardiac surgeon (me) and a pediatric cardiologist (Ginnie) in about five years when we are done with training.

In the picture below you see Emily Matthews, Dave Matthews and Ginnie having a quick lunch before we board our first of four flights to Eldoret. I’ll try to post more in Detroit when we have a bit more of a layover. Noah and Esther are staying with the Caleb & Melissa again. What a blessing to have two great friends who are willing to take care of our kids to allow us to participate in this vision trip. It’s also a great blessing to have our sending church Faith praying for us and supporting us. More soon.
